Strategy punts

If Kings want someone to play more of an anchor’s role, Shikhar Dhawan could be that batter. Super Giants, though, can counter that move somewhat with Dushmantha Chameera.

Chameera has dismissed Shikhar twice in 25 balls while conceding only 30 runs.In the middle overs, Super Giants can keep Shikhar quiet by pairing him against Pandya. Even though Pandya turns the ball in to Dhawan, the batter has managed only 29 runs off 26 balls against him.

On the other hand, Shikhar has taken Ravi Bishnoi, a legspinner who mostly bowls sliders and googlies, for 36 runs off 19 balls. Neither spinner, though, has dismissed him so far in T20 cricket.Manish Pandey has been struggling for runs.

In six innings this season, he has scored only 88 runs at a strike rate of 110. Super Giants have a couple of options in front of them. They can replace him with Manan Vohra, who can bat at No. 3. Or they can even bring in K Gowtham and move Ayush Badoni up the order.

Stats that matter

Rahul is one of only three batters to have struck at more than 145 against both pace and spin (minimum 100 runs against each type). Jos Buttler and David Miller are the other two.Against Kagiso Rabada, de Kock has scored 89 runs off 61 balls without any dismissal, but Arshdeep Singh has got him out twice in 14 balls while giving away only 14 runs.

Among those who have bowled at least five death overs this season, Arshdeep has the best economy (5.66).Rahul has scored only 36 runs off 35 balls against Rahul Chahar with one dismissal but Stoinis has taken the legspinner apart, plundering 32 runs off 12 balls without getting out.

Out of eight, Kings have lost seven tosses in this season.

Venue Info

The state-of-the-art Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium is located on the outskirts of Pune at Gahunje. The ground, also popularly known as Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium, was inaugurated by Sharad Pawar in 2012. Interestingly, it was scheduled to be constructed by 2010, but it wasn’t until 2012 that it became ready to host cricket fixtures. In fact, it was supposed to be ready in time to host matches during the 2011 World Cup.

In the past, the Nehru stadium in Pune, was used for international matches. Unfortunately, due to issues related to ticket allotment between the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) and the Pune Municipal Corporation, resulted in MCA taking the necessary step of building another ground. For a brief period, it was called as the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium. However, as the Sahara India Parivar couldn’t pay the entire amount that it had guaranteed for buying the ‘naming rights’ of the stadium, it was again changed to Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

The first ever international fixture at the ground was a T20 International played between India and England in December 2012. In 2012, it also hosted its first IPL match, when Pune Warriors India took on Kings XI Punjab.

Pitch Conditions:

The track tends to be a good wicket for batting. However, the spinners are known to play their part as the game progresses and can get it to grip off the surface. The covers manufactured by Griffon Hoverwork, has been praised by the Indian skipper, MS Dhoni.

What to expect: Four out of the seven games at the MCA Stadium have been won by teams batting first with Rajasthan Royals even going on to defend the lowest total of the season, 144. The dew hasn’t been of much help to chasing sides but the pitches have generally been kind to the batters, and spinners as the game progresses. Barring the RR game, all other totals here have been in excess of 150.

Team Watch

Punjab Kings

Tactics and Matchups: LSG’s most apparent weakness is in their top-order with opener Quinton de Kock’s form tapering off after two fifties in the first three games and only a combined 87 runs coming off the bat of the three options they’ve tried at No.3 in the eight innings so far. Struggling for runs, Manish Pandey averages only 7 against Rabada and has been twice dismissed by the South African in all T20s.

Probable XI: Shikhar Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal (C), Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow, Jitesh Sharma (Wk), Rishi Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh, Sandeep Sharma

Lucknow Super Giants

Tactics and Matchups: LSG have only sparingly used Marcus Stoinis the bowler in this IPL, but his stellar record against Mayank – two dismissals in three games – might tempt Rahul into giving him a go at his captaincy successor at PBKS, who’s had a middling season so far. However, leggie Ravi Bishnoi’s tapering form – just two wickets in last four games at 9+ RPO as compared to four in the first four games at under 7 – could make him an easy middle-overs target for his former side.

Probable XI: Quinton de Kock (Wk), KL Rahul (C), Manish Pandey, Krunal Pandya, Deepak Hooda, Ayush Badoni, Marcus Stoinis, Jason Holder, Avesh Khan/Mohsin Khan, Dushmantha Chameera, Ravi Bishnoi
